INFANT MORTALITY.
SYDNEY’S PROGRESS. “The number of babies who die during the first year of their lives Inis been halved during the last 20 years,” said Dr Elina Sandford Morgan, speaking at the opening of the baby health centre at Lindfield, Sydney, recently. “Except for New Zealand we have the lowest death-rate in the world, and the city of Sydney has the lowest deathrate among infants of any large city. “One hears criticism of the health centres and people says that modern mothers are coddled,” Dr Morgan said. “They claim that mothers used to bring their babies up without help. Now they bring all their babies up, which was not always the case formerly. Deaths are no longer caused by wrong feeding, but by infectious diseases.” Dr Morgan’s speech was punctuated by chuckles and gurgles from the babies present, and some expressed hearty disapproval of the proceedings by loud wails.
