JERSEY CATTLE.

MANAWATU CLUB’S ANNUAL REPORT. The president of tlie Manawatu Jersey Cattle Breeders’ Club, Mr J. A. Russell, will submit the following report to the annual meeting-The cub continues to improve its position in regard to finance, die year revealing a surplus of £l9 0* 9d. The first Derby Stakes were completed at die .Manawatu A. and I’. Show in 1934. There were 116 entries, but it was most disappointing in the number of heifers which were brought forward to the Show. Some 65 heifers were nominated for the second Derby Stakes which were completed at. the 1935" .Manawatu Show. _ but here again it was very disappointing in the number of heifers paraded before the judge. Fiftv-five heifer* have been nominated for the third Derby Stakes, which will lie completed at the forthcoming Manawatu A. and P. Show, and we arc looking forward to a much larger field facing the judge. It is to bo regretted that the interest in the stakes is definitely waning, and unless there is more support, forthcoming for future competitions it may he advisable to revise the conditions governing the competition or subsittutc an entirely new class. '£so9 MANAWATU OAKS. f.a-f year the dub organised one of- the most outstanding competitions arranged in recent, years, the £SOO Manawatu Oaks. Nominations for the competition totalled 174, and the owners of 65 of these heifers paid the first acceptance fee of £1 ■ Is by the due date, November 30, 1935, and these now remain in the contest. A final acceptance of £2 2s ha* to be paid on qualification not later than January 31, 1937. The competition will be completed at the Feilding A and I’. Association’s Show’ in 1937, and wc are looking forward to a big field facing the judges. Another successful field day w : as conducted by the club in April last at the property of .Mr H. J. Lancaster, Glen Oroua. There was a largo attendance of members and their friends as well as a largo contingent of pupils of the Palmerston North. Bovs’ High School. A. AND P. SHOWS. The club has been very active during the year in assisting the Manawatu and Feilding A. and P. Associations in providing extra prize money for special Jersey classes, and in this connection we have to thank the X.Z. Jersey Breedens’ Association for their generous subsidy. The judging competition lor juveniles at the Manawatu Show was again most successful, when no fewer than 36 participated, the competitors showing great interest and knowledge of their subjects. No doubt such competitions prove a splendid opportunity to popularise the Jersey breed and sustain the interest of the young folk. A great deal of the success was due to the enthusiasm of .Mr J. .Murray, rector, and Mr J, J. Stevenson, agricultural instructor, of the Palmerston North Boys’ High School, and the club’s thanks arc dtte to these gentlemen for their valuable assistance. Wc desire to express our thanks to Mr N. I. Nielsen, who lias for some years rendered honorary services in the capacity of auditor. 'The club lints maintained a steady record of progress during the past few years and the executive continues to keep in view the main function and purpose of the club, namely, the furthering of the interests of ins member* and Jersey breeders generally. During the past few years there lias been a satisfactory increase in the membership and subscriptions collected, and if the progress in this respect is to be maintained, I w'ould again urge members to assist the executive by inducing any fellow breeders in their district to become members of the club. HOROWHENTA CLUB. A credit balance of £o was shown at the annual meeting of the Horowhemta Jersey Cattle Chib, this week. The president (Mr A. Horn) said that although that was satisfactory it was not large, and lie thought a slight increase in the members’ subscriptions might be advisable. Mr 11. J. Lancaster had retired from the position of secretary after bolding it for 10 years, it was stated. The following officers were elected for the ensuing year:—Patron, Mi; 11. L. Horn; president, Air A. Horn; vicepresidents, Messrs H. J. Lancaster and I. D. Parsons; secretary, Mr W. A. Smith; auditor, Mr W. Smaill; delegates to affiliated clubs’ sales committee conference, Messrs A. Horn, H. J.
