FARMING NEWS.

RURAL RAILINGS

A general overhaul has been carried out at the Rexdale cheese factory, Pahiatua, and everything is now in good order for the opening of the season.. The winter live stock market in Gisborne is quietly active lor both fats and stores. The mutton and beef markets in Auckland have firmed lately and shipments have been arranged from Gisborne to supplement the diminishing northern supplies. Mr W. F. Blanchard’s herd of Jersey cows grazed continuously on what has heretofore been known as the Wailiarara gumfield have won the position of highest producers in the Mangonui and Whangaroa counties for- the last three seasons with an average production of 351.001 b. butterfat in 1935-36, 409.681 b in 1934-35, and 383.441 b. in 1933-34. Fat stock-killings for export at the Kaiti freezing works, near Gisborne, during the season just closed were smaller in all classes of stock, except for pigs, which have reached 10,000 for the first time. The biggest percentage decline is in grown cattle, the number of which was little more than j half the total for the previous season. Sheep and lambs declined by approximately 36,000, while the calf total was about 1500 lower. A raid by wandering dogs was made on a flock of sheep owned by Mr D G. McMillan and paddoclted in a Borough Council paddock at Paeroa. Several sheep were killed outright and others were so badly injured that they had to be destroyed. The borough inspector, Mr J. McCorquodale, was informed of the raid and he shot five dogs all unregistered, which were involved in the' raid. Other dogs escaped. Mr McMillan will he a heavy loser. • According to a statement made by Mr M. Petrie, secretary of the Northern Wairoa .Dairy Company, at a meeting of suppliers at Wail me, the company this month will distribute a sum of £36,000, being part of deferred payment. He stated that the actual realisation of stocks afloat at the time of balance had so lar exceeded the price at 'which they had been taken into the accounts, and a further amount than that quoted in the balance-sheet, £51,722, would he payable to suppliers when the final documents were received, about October. Mr Petrie further stated that gross realisations from factories in North Auckland, on figures so far available, were: Northern Wairoa, 14.139; Ruawai, 13.871; Hikurangi, 14.691; Maungaturoto, 13.559; Bay of Islands, 13.74; Albertla.nd, 14.337; Matakami, 13.49.
