TEETH AND GOITRE
N.Z. HEALTH FAILINGS. CONSUMPTION OF MILK. DUNEDIN. Julv 17. In an address to young farmers at present visiting Dunedin, Professor C. E. Hercus said New Zealanders had two distinct failings in regard to their health—their teeth and goitre. Medical authorities were still looking for improved public co-operation with regard to the prevention of diseases. said the professor. As far back as history could record, people had lived on milk taken from animate. Many countries used milk from other sources than cows. People in this Dominion confined their usage to human milk and cows’ milk. There was yet to be found anyone who could condemn milk from cows as providing excellent nutrition. Although not a perfect food, it provided what was deficient in our diet. Extra supplies given to school children had made an appreciable difference in the health of the children and it was recognised by health officers that a pint of milk a. day was essential to the health of tire child, _ but according to the Government statistician half a pint was the average daily consumption. If that extra half pint was added, it would' increase the Dominion milk consumption bv 35,000,DOO ga.llons. Professor Hercus said that, as far is he knew, the Wellington City Council milk supply was the only municipal supply in the British Empire.
