PIPES FROZEN
ROTORUA DIFFICULTIES. WORST FROST FOR TWO YEARS. ROTORUA, July 17. The most severe frost for two years was experienced in Roto.ua and outlying districts on Wednesday morning, the grass minimum temperature being equivalent to 13.3 degrees. Water pipes and taps were frozen in many parts of the town area, and plumbers were in constant demand. Long icicles were hanging from the eaves of many houses, and from the lamp posts. In many outlying districts the frost was more severe than in the town area. Twenty degrees of frost were experienced in Orunnui. One timber mill was unable to work for three hours owing to the pipes which convey cold water to cool the saws being frozen. Oil torches were used in an effort to start the water flowing, but no sooner was the water freed in one part than it froze again. Electric wires and telephone wires in the Atiamuri district were weighed down with frost and icicles ranging from 12in to 18in in length.
