OVERWHELMING WIN.
KIA TOA TOO STRONG
Fielding a side far too strong for the opposition, Kia Toa had an overwhelming win against Eeilding B by 33 points to 8, at Rugbv Park, retaining the Jubilee Cup. Eeilding B scored their eight points in the last five minutes, when the winners eased up a little. The teams were:
Kia Toa. —Carr, Barnao, Jarvis, Berryman, Thomas, Thorburn, Thorne, Was ley, Beard, McKenzie, Williams, Latham, Crawford, Speedy, Greatorex. Eeilding B. —M. Dernier, C. Stevens, Gleeson, Merritt, Thompson, Kitchen, Brown, Pentecost, Rasmussen, Nicholson, W. Fitzgerald. McFarland, Crev, Jaggard, Lamberton. i Ivia Toa swung into the attack immediately, and only a few minutes elapsed before Eeilding infringed right in front of their posts, Carr .kicking an easy penalty goal. Carr missed a rolling ball after a centring kick by Merritt, and Gleeson carried on almost to the line, just failing to gather in the ball and go across. Kia Toa took play to the other end, where Thorne despatched his backs and Thomas came round on the outside again to receive and complete in the corner. Carr’s kick missed. Williams next came through to accept the hall on the bounce and make a long run, beating the opposition and scoring near the posts. Carr did not add the major points. Thorburn followed through fast a few minutes later to be just beaten in the dive for the ball near the posts. Greatorex next scored from a forward rush, and Wasley converted. Crawford secured possession in the ruck and started a movement which ended in Barnao scoring. Wasley failed to convert, and Kia. Toa led by 17 points to nil at the interval.
Eeilding rallied a little in the second spell, although Dernier had t'vo narrow escapes when caught in possession. Fifteen minutes after the resumption Thorburn kicked through and Barnao chased the rolling ball to score in the corner. McKenzie’s kick missed. Almost immediately afterwards Jarvis dashed over for Carr to convert. Williams opened up a forward movement which saw the ball go to Crawford, to Thomas, to Barnao, who took the ball nicely in his stride to race round behind the posts. Williams converted. From a rush near the Eeilding line McKenzie burst through and passed to Beard ior the latter to dive over. Thorburn’s kick missed. Gleeson, late in the game, had a chance to kick a penalty goal from right in front, but tailed. However, McFarland, following up fast, came through to secure the touch-down front a Eeilding rush, and Thompson converted. Gleeson next burst through and handed on to Merritt, who made a fast run before passing to Stevens, who obtained a try in the corner. Thompson’s kick failed, and the game ended with the score:
