MAGISTRATE’S COURT
BREACHES OF BY-LAWS. Mr J. L. Stout, S.M., presided over the sitting of the Magistrate’s Court at Palmerston North to-day. I L. C. Bond pleaded not guilty to a charge of failing to keep to the centre line of the road when turning from the Square into Rangitieki Street. Constable Waugh gave evidence that at 4.15 p.m., on May 22, he saw a motor-cycle “cut the corner.” There . was not much traffic, but there were quite a number of pedestrians about. There was a kit of tools on the machine. Constable O’Boyle said that when j interviewed defendant said he did not l remember being in the vicinity at the time alleged. Defendant testified that he had no recollection of the alleged offence, and did not finish work until 4-30 p.m. on the day in question. Several prospective purchasers had had a trial run on the machine, but it was unlikely that lie would leave his tools on it. Defendant was fined £l, with 10s costs. A similar penalty was imposed on G. S. Bullin on a charge of crossing the railway line in the Square on May 23 when an engine was approaching. Defendant said he did not take unnecessary risks, and did not remember committing the offence. Charles Stevens (Awaliou North) was fined £2, with 14s costs, on a charge that, ho ing the driver of a motor vehicle involved in an accident causing injury to a person on May 19, he failed to report the matter forthwith to the nearest police station. Constable Fischer stated that when interviewed defendant had said he did not think the matter required reporting. There had been a collision at a sharp corner with another car, and Mrs Dimock, a passenger in the latter vehicle, had received a facial injury, and defendant said he had not considered it serious.
