VALEDICTORY

Mr F. Murray, who for the past three years has been stationed at Longburn, and is now taking up a position in the district manager’s office at \\ ellington, was the guest of honour_at a valedictory function on Wednesuay evening. The Longburn Hall was well filled with men rrom Longburn and surrounding distsricts, all sections of the community being represented. A jolly evening, characterised, by a bright spirit of fellowship, was spent by those present. Eulogistic references were made to Mr Murray’s useful service to the district,' his tact, cheerfulness and efficiency being remarked upon. Appreciation was also expressed of bis work in connection with the launching and management of the local Sports and Pastimes Cluh.

The toast list included “Mr and Mrs Murray,” “The New Zealand Bailways,’’ and “The Pastimes Club.” the I speakers being Messrs Weddell, A. | Mitchell, JoTiansen. Martin, Lundy, I Burroughs, llrockliss, and Searle. Mr Murray emphasised the excellence of the railways organisation, its management and service. Their watchword was service and the spirit of friendliness and co-operation existed between the. different branches. I Mr Murray was the recipient of a I dinner wagon and a smoker’s stand, j the presentation being made by tlie . chairman, Mr Weddell. Mr Mitchell ■ referred to the excellent service that the railways were giving to Palmerston North, the service at Longburn being second to none. Mr Mitchell, on behalf of the farming community, expressed the appreciation of farmers at the i courtesy and assistance given to them by the >'ailwnv staff. The loss suffered by the departure of Mr Murray was a j severe one. as his place would be hard , to fill. i
