MONTHLY MEETING. ENGINEER’S REPORT. The YVoodville County Council held their monthly meeting on Saturday, Mr M. O. Grainger presiding over the following members:—Crs R. T. Mabey, G. Peebles, T. H. AA 7 illinms, R. H. Morgan, J. Galloway, O. H. Drucc, and H. Sheffield.

The chairman referred to the bereavement suffered by the county clerk (Mr J. N. Graham) and a motion of sympathy with him and his family was carried. CORRESPONDENCE.

The Patangaia County advised that the conference to discuss what action should ho taken to combat the noxious weeds menace would ho held on July 7, and Cr Peebles was appointed the AAYiodville delegate. The Minister of Internal Affairs wrote appealing for the county’s cooperation in tlie celebration of Arbor Day. ”

The Tauranga County Council wrote expression the opinion that in the event of a union being formed comprising nil county council workers it should he distinct from other unions of workers. The Education Board wrote asking the council to reconsider the decision in regard to the proposed site of the Otawhao Rond School and to allow them to erect a temporary school, which would be movable, on the roadway.—The chairman pointed out that they had a legal opinion on the matter and they could not go past it. A motion on these lines was adopted. Among several legal opinions received was one relating to trees obstructing the view of railway crossings and whether local authorities or the occupiers were liable for accidents resulting therefrom. The advice received was that as a local authority was not hound by law to issue notices requiring trees to he removed, or to cause them to he removed, it could not he held responsible. It was also contended that occupiers were not liable. The sanitary inspector in his annual report stated that there had been two cases of tuberculosis, one of hydatids, and one of tetanus. Transfers wore approved from J. McPealc. to P. G. McPeak, C. B. Morgan to Riverbank Dairy Co., and Mrs J. Dun ford to R. S. Beattie. ENG INKER’S R EPORT.

The engineer (Mr W. J. Hawkins) in His report stated : Woodville riding.—Metal repairs were attended to on Oxford. Woodlands, Bush null’s and Conduit’s ltoads. Grading was one on Oxford, Woodlands, Bushmill, Pinfold and Conduit’s lload6 and on McLean Street. Culvert ends on Oxford Road have been repaired. Surfacing was attended to on Snddle and IVhariti Roads. The suspension bridge on Bellshaw’s Road has been rebuilt and a protection groyne constructed. Manga - atua : Grading was done on Jackson’s, Bluff, Range, Ormond’s, Sturdee, Troup, Judd’s Simpson’s, Bowman’s and Priest Roads. Metal patching was attended to on Range, Simpson’s, Bluff, Sturdee and Jackson’s Roads. A small wooden bridge on Jackson s Road has been replaced with concrete pipes. Bridge decking repairs were attended to on Priest’s and Bluff Roads. Davis’ Road filling has been completeel. A subsidence on Bluff Road lias been repaired. Kumeroa: Grading was done on River and Township s Roads. Metal repairs were attended to on Little’s. Potter’s, Otawhao, River and Township’s Roads. Groyne work was dong at a wash-out on Mackay s Road. Decking repairs were attended to on Druce’s Road bridge. One concrete pier at Jvearinss bridge has been completed and the other is now being built. Maharahara: Grading was done on Oringi. Jackson s. Daisford Sturdee and Horetaunga Roads. Metal repairs were attended to on Sturdee, Graham, Gaisford s, Oringi and Ross Roads. Slips were removed and -water-tables cleaned on Grahame’s Road. Bridge repairs were attended to on Gaisford’s Road. Main . highways. —Woodville-Palmer-ston North, No.‘ 1: Slips were removed, and surface repairs carried out. Bridge repairs were attended to. Na-pier-Wellington: Grading was done where necessary and metal repairs attended to. Shoulders were metalled, slips were removed, and watertables cleaned. Decking and handrails on Papatawa bridge were repaired. I! ootl-ville-Hopelands: Grading was done where necessary and metal repairs attended to. Culverts were repaired and watertaides cleaned. lloodviHeTamaki: Grading was done throughout and surface repairs attended to. Slips were removed and watertables cleaned. Culverts and bridge repairs were attended to. Side drains are being cleaned. Freelands highway, No. 9: Hus .road was graded and metal repairs carried out where necessary. Bridge approaches were repaired and intertables cleaned. . , Speaking of the work carried out in the Woodville riding. Cr. Morann said it had been most successful. The county’s thanks were due to Mr II . J. Williams for cutting back the trees in Woodlands Road when requested by the engineer. The chairman said i\H Williams had given a lead that could well be followed by other ratepayers. Mr Morgan suggested that the engineer should take steps to have trees that hindered-the vision at other dangerous corners removed. Ibis was agreed to. Cr. Galloway thought that ratepayers should be allowed to clean drains adjacent to their properties. He also mentioned the low-lyinu position of Sturdee’s Road, where the drain required clearing. This was referred to the engineer. . "The chairman, before closing the meeting, wished Cr. Morgan an enjoyable holiday on his trip to the Islands.
