HEALTH OF MAORIS
' URGENCY OF IMPROVEMENT. Per Press Association. NEW PLYMOUTH, June 29. A spur should be given to obto.in better conditions, otherwise many unfortunate people with tuberculosis would not have a fair chance, said Hon. P. Fraser (Minister of Health), when replying to a request by the Taranaki Hospital Board for separate aceomur'odation for patients with tuberculosis. “The complaint is particularly acute among the Maoris,” said the Minister, “and the problem is complicated by the difficulties to be faced. We must start teaching the rudimentary principles of health and hygiene, and give the Maoris a realisation that good housing and sunshine are necessities of life. When one goes to a Native school and sees rows of medicine bottles one realises there is something different in the approach to Maori treatment as compared with pakeha health problems. The matter has to- be faced, and I hope shortly to have a conference with the Health Department with the object of embarking on a campaign to bring succour to the Ain or i people."
