MOCK TRIAL.
TOWNSWOMEN’S GUILD. “In (these days, when woman is striving to show her superiority to man, according to Act 1999, any woman in charge of a motor car has every right to dash headlong into any male person she may see riding a bicycle around the Square of Palmerston North.” That was a remark made by Judge Ongley (Mrs W. S. Woodroofe), when she summed up the evidence and passed judgment at a mock trial held bv the Civic Circlo of the Palmerston North Townswomen’s Guild, at the monthly meeting o’ the guild yesterday. “I would like to add,” further commented the judge, “that the trecu in the Square gardens were planted many I years ago, by some far-seeing gentleman of the Palmerston North Borough I Council, for the express purpose of I safety to man in these days of woman's ascension to fame. I herewith issue a note of warning to a.ll men c.vciifits that, upon seeing a woman ! approaching driving any _ motor vej hide, they should dash behind the or hedges of our Square gardens for safety—should they fail to do thin, thev must put up with any harm that mav befall them.” The conclusion of j this address, and the retirement of the ; judge who delivered it. brought to a ! close a trial which swept the court, oi rather the audience, in the Empire Hal! with' laughter, and which was flavoured with a merrv wit and topical
