REDUCED INCIDENCE. Per Press Association. WELLINGTON, June 26. The total of local body taxation for the financial yenr ended March 31. 1934, reached £6,042,033, according to figures made available by the Government Statistician (Mr J. YV. Butcher). This reveals a small increase of £11,556 over the figure for the previous financial year, but as a result of a slight rise in population the rate per head of population has dropped from "-.£3 ,18s 3d in 1933-34 to £3 17s lOd in-1'934-35. A comparison lietween receipts from local body taxation for 1933434 and 1934-35 is given, in tlle following table : 1933- Rates, £5,541,255; licenses, and other taxes, £489,224; total, £6.030,479. 1934- Rates,' £5,511.442; licenses and other taxes, £530,501; total, £6,042,033. •-- In the latest figures available, the total receipts from rates are made up as follow:—General rates. £2,461,161; other rates, £3,050.281.

The Arbitration Court to-day heard an application liv the Dunedin Brewery and the Wilson Malt Extract Coy., Ltd., for exemption from the 40-hour week as the work was continuous and required six days’ attention. The employers ultimately agreed to accept the 40-hour week, an arrangement being made between the parties to spread the hours over the six days.
