PAH lAT LA, J une 25. In the mid-week games of the Bush Ladieu’ Hockey Association, Kaitawa beat Haniua, 4—l, and ; United beat Nireaha, 3 —l. Wanderers had a bye. The results, of the junior basketball games on Wednesday are : Pahiatua 11 v. Athletic 5; Convent 15 v. Woodville 12. When walking along a plank in the railway yards on Tuesday morning, Mr T O’Brien had the misfortune to fall, severely injuring an ankle. On Wednesday evening parishioners of the St. Peter’6 Church of England assembled at the Foresters’ Hall for the pa.tronal festival of the church. The vicar (Rev. H. Wilson) presided and warmly welcomed the parishioners to the festive table, where the Ladies’ Guild, under the charge of Mrs J. D. C. Crewe, had prepared an enjoyable repast. Proceedings later took the form of a debate between members of St. Peter’s Girls’ Club and the church vestry, the subject being “Should coloured races be allowed to settle in parts of the British Empire not suited for occupation by white men.” The affirmative was taken bv the vestry, while the Girls’ Club members opposed the measure, the negative proving the victors bv a small margin. The judges, Messrs S. T. Tinney and C. C. Smyth, congratulated the speakers on their fine performance. The individual placings in order of merit were:—Negative: Miss B. Boyd 1, Miss M. Taylor 2. Affirmative: Mr G. L. Chatwin 1, Air T. Truscott 2. The death occurred on Saturday last, at the Dannevirke Hospital, of Mr John Lang, senr., who had resided in that district for 50 years. Mr Lang was born in Nelson in 1859. In his younger davs he worked in Canterbury for a number of years and was later employed on the Mnngatoro Station, in the Dannevirke district. Subsequ«ntly he was engaged in sawmilling j in the Pahiatua and Southern Hawke s Bay areas prior to taking up farming) at Tipapakuku. 1
