The convention that inside traffic on hills should give way to outside traffic was adopted by the South Island Motor Union at its quarterly conference at Waima'te.

The Minister of Education (Hon. P. Fraser) has advised Mr C. L. Hunter, M.P. for Manawatu, that he has approved of a grant for the erection of a new school at Tangimoana. The flood water on the AVhirokino highway between Foxton and Levin had subsided sufficiently this morning to allow of the passage of all but very light cars. It is expected that by to-night the route will he open to all traffic
Owing to the Tiritea Stream becoming flooded last week, silt clearance operations had to be suspended at the city’s reservoir, which filled with water. It is now empty again, and good progress is being made with the removal of the remainder of the silt, which has been loosened by the scouring. It is estimated that the work will take three weeks to complete. Minor injuries were suffered by Mrs E. F. Ashley, an elderly woman from Ohakune, when she was involved in a collision with a car at the intersection of Church Street and the Square while rain was falling early last evening. Mrs Ashley, who was walking with her daughter, Mrs H. W. Tweedale, of 21. Worcester Street, with whom she is at present staying, was attended by a doctor and then taken home.
The pilot and passenger of a Wanganui Aero Club Moth ’plane proceeding to Wellington on Saturday afternoon saw an unusual sight about five miles south of Himatangi when a flight of over 1000 wild ducks suddenly flew into the air from the mouth of a small stream. The birds from a distance appeared as a huge black cloud, but as the ’plane passed over them they flow off in every direction.
“It there is failure to use the maximum of our coal I will have no hesitation in recommending the Government to place coal in the same position by tariff protection as all other commodities. I appreciate the response by tlie gas companies to my appeal to use more New Zealand coal, but I still think that they could increase their present orders.” This statement was made in Christchurch bv the Minister of Mines (lion. Evidence of the mildness of the winter is to be found in the fact that the higher peaks of the Tararua Ranges, visible from Palmerston North, which at midwinter have their seasonal coat of snow, are still bare of their white mantle. Beautiful weather prevailed today 7 for the King’s Birthday holiday. Not for many years have such pleasantly mild conditions been experienced, and attractions out of doors were consequently well patronised, while many motorists enjoyed the bright sunshine for pleasure trips.
An act of deliberate destruction is suspected in connection with the shattering of the floodgate at the point where the recently-diverted Tutaekuri River water flows into a new channel near AVaitangi, says a Napier message. The discovery was made on Friday. 'The floodgate had been smashed and gave the explanation as to why, during the heavy rainfall last week, large areas in the Brookfields and Papakura blocks on the northern side of the Tutaekuri River had been flooded. Tlie matter has been placed in the hands of the police. It is suspected that tlie floodgate was deliberately blown open with gelignite. A living proof of the efficacy of his own rules for long life, Dr. James Daiziel, of Pukekolie, celebrated his 91st birthday on Saturday, says an Auckland paper. He. maintains wonderfully good health, which he claims to be due to a careful diet of plain food, early rising, and living as much as possible in the open air. He usually rises shortly after daybreak. Dr. Daiziel was born in' Northumberland, .and. after being a pupil teacher, went to sea on a sailing ship. Following a fall from aloft, he returned to the land in search of a career, and studied medicine. .About 57 years ago he came to New Zealand, arriving in the ship Adamant, and established himself in a medical practice in Pukekohe.
