MISSION WORKER.

TRIBUTE BY CHINESE. AUCKLAND, June 15. European and Chinese admirers of the l»te_ Rev. William Mawson united in worship yesterday afternoon at the dedication of the William Mawson Memorial Hall in Cook Street. The hall had for some time been the headquarters of the Presbyterian Chinese Mission in Auckland and the Chinese community decided after Mr Mawson’s death a year ago that it would be a fitting tribute to his work to clear the building of debt and formally dedicate it to his memory. The Presbytery agreed to this and an intensive campaign for funds resulted in the raising of £234. A collection_ at yesterday’s service totalled over £27. with the result that debts on the building are now l-es* than £lO. The hall was filled to overflowing, the congregation comprising about half European and half Chinese. Rev. W. Bower Black, Moderator of the Presbytery, conducted the service and led the dedication jiraycr, while addresses were delivered by Rev. George Budd and Rev. Y. S. Chau, Chinese Presbyterian minister in Auckland. Speaking in Chinese, Mr Chau said the Presbyterian Church had lost a leader in Mr Mawson. He would always think of him as a good man, a lovable practical Christian and a fine teacher. Throughout his life he had been a true friend of the Chinese people. For 20 years he had worked in Canton with conspicuous success and had continued his good work on liis return to Auckland.
