The diamond jubilee celebrations of the St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church. Palmerston North, are to be held shortly over a period of five days.

While out shooting the other day Mr J. A. Miller, of Gimmerburn, Otago, had the unusual experience of seeing and shooting a pure white hare. Twenty-nine blackfish, a small species of whale, were stranded on Westshore Beach Napier .early on Friday morning, and employees of the Napier Harbour Board toned them out to sea again. They- varied in size from 12ft. to 16ft., and some weighed more than a ton.

Tlie Horowhenua County Council decided, at its monthly meeting on Saturday, to apply for the declaration of nine miles of road, from Makerua to the Rangitane bridge and back to the highway at Tokamaru, as a subsidiary highway. It was stated by tlie engineer (Mr J. T. M. Brewster) that the maintenance costs on that length of road had been very heavy. A similar application hail been made twice before.

'llie epidemics in Samoa show little sign of abatement, and many deaths of infants are reported from the effects of whooping cough (writes a correspondent). Dysentery has also ‘ been responsible for several fatal cases. A medical practitioner has experimented with blood transfusions in the treatment of whooping cough, with some success, and the .scheme is now being geenrally adopted. In ail cases the blood is taken from tlie mother of the child treated and. although the treatment does not cure the complaint, in every ease relief is reported. “Nothing is more objectionable than advertising over the air,” said Mr 0. Ogilvie, manager of Beatli and Company, Ltd., Christchurch, in commenting on the Broadcasting Bill. He based liis opposition to the proposal on the system of broadcast advertisements in America. “One meets this broadcasting advertising very extensively there,” he said. “Perhaps it is even more offensive at night after a busy day, when one has to listen to advertising ‘bunk’ of all kinds. Especially is it bad in the big hotel lounges in America. In private homes it can easily be got rid of, shutting off the machine, but it is always hateful,” he said.

How eels had caused a bad leak in the Horow'honua water race w r as related at the monthly meeting of the Horowhenua County Council at Levin, on Saturday, by the engineer (Mr J. T. M. Brewster). The engineer explained that eels had wriggled through the wet mud alongside a concrete pipe, thus making a channel for the escape of water. According to a statement made by the Minister in charge of Tourist and Health Resorts (Hon. F. Langstone) no action is to be taken by the Government in regard to a suggestion made by Mr A. E. Smith, of Rotorua, that the level of Lake Rotomahana should be lowered with the object of ascertaining the fate of the Pink and White Terraces, which disappeared horn view during the Mount Tarawera eruption of June 10, 188 G. The Government’s proposals to place the Maori on a basis ot equality with the European and to give effect to the Treaty of Waitangi in spirit as well as in letter will be fully discussed this month at the Sir Maui Poniare memorial meeting at Waitara. The deoate on the recent statement of policy made by the Prime Minister (Mr Savage) will begin on June 25 and finish the following night, so that the Maori view may be submitted to the Prime Minister on June 27.

On the recommendation of the works committee, the Horowhenua County Couneil, at its monthly meeting at Levin, on Saturday, decided to make application for a Government grant for the further formation and metalling of the Hokio-Waitarere Road on the' basis of an estimated cost of £3OO and a subsidy of £1 tor £l. It was also decided that, in preparation for the proposed w'ork, the settlers concerned be asked to undertake the grubbing of gorse on the road over the lull width ot its formation.
