OUTLOOK FOR WOOL
VALUES SHOULD RISE, SHORTAGE OF SUPPLIES. UNSETTLING FACTORS. (United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright.) Received May 18, 10.25 a.m. LONDON, May 17. Messrs H. Dawson, Sons, and Co., Ltd., commenting on the wool outlook, say that the slight recession at the opening of the London sales, though a necessary adjustment of the March scarcity rates, disturbed confidence. The paucity of supplies during the next four months should tend to lift values, but the fact remains that topmakers cannot make higher prices. The European outlook continues to be an unsettling factor. France is reported to bo bolding stocks of ' raw materials as an insurance against devaluation, which may come on the market for realisation. The summer will be the' testing time of values which, despite the strong statistical position of raw material, have been sustained only by the remarkable prosperity of the home trade. Exporters are gratified at the Irish Government’s decision to abolish the import tax of 10s per cental on wool, both raw and waste, entering the Free State.
