ASSAULT ON EVEREST.

FINE PROGRESS MADE. CAMP FOUR REACHED. Received May IS. 12.55 p.m. LONDON, May 17. A copyright message from Mr Hugh Ruttledge by wireless, via Calcutta, from camp 3 says that Mr Wyn Harris and Mr Kempson, with 46 porters, made a successful trip to camp 4 on the North Col on Mav 14. The route in places is along very steep ice and snow, but it is remarkably safe from avalanches. The porters went up splendidly, only one being unable to face the steepness of the final sections. Tents were pitched on the ridge, within two feet of the remains of the tent left by Mr E. E. Shipton when he carried out the survey last year. Messrs Smythe' and Shipton look advantage of the quiet conditions, and with 41 porters, occupied the camp for the purpose of continuing the advance up the ridge within the next day or two if the weather permits. They established wireless communication with camp 3. “They report that all the porters, who had previously assured me of their determination to push the attack home, are in the highest spirits. Messrs Wyn Harris, Kempson, Warren and Oliver, who will occupy camp 4 when the first party advances, will form the second and third assault parties,” Mr Ruttlcdge added.
