PRIMATE OF NORMANBY.
REMOVAL FROM OFFICE. ROUEN, Mav 16. A sensation lias been caused in Roman Catholic circles throughout France owing to the Pope removing the septuagenarian Momsignor Villerabel, Primate of Normandy, from the office of Archbishop of Rouen. This is the climax to a long controversy in which Monsignor Villerabel took action for misappropriation of funds against his vicar-general, Monsignor Bertin, in the civil instead of ecclesiastical court, thereby infringing canon law. The diocesan courts had already convicted Monsignor Bertin, but the Vatican quashed the conviction, whereupon the Ministry of the Interior intervened. and reopened the case. Monsignor Villerabel had three times refused to resign as, bv doing so, he would admit a fault of which lie was not guilty. The Pope has appointed the Archbishop of Cambrai to administer tbe archidiocese. Monsignor Villerabel has refused to leave the palace, which he holds on Government lease.
