SATURDAY’S MEETINGS. NOTES ON SOME RUNNERS. (By “Spectator.”) Palm is to contest the hurdle event ai Ashburton prior to being brought north for the Auckland meeting. Dolrain lias shown a return to form lately and with 7.13 has a chance in the Woodstock Stakes at Te Awamtitu. High Glee is a good hack that will not go out friendless in the Myross Handicap at Invercargill. Courtyard was raced twice at Amberley last Saturday and each time bo was disappointed in the run to the judge. He has made rapid improvement lately and should make amends very soon. Travcnna, a solid_ winter performer in tho south, is shaping exceptionally well on tho tracks at Witigatui. Ho is engaged in tho President’s Handicap at Invercargill and tho winter going will suit him. Pontv ran a good second to Chief Ranger at Riccartori last month and he should show up at Ashburton as the lot opposed to him aro not strong. Chief Lama disappointed his connections at Waimato, but ho is a good one and may make amends in tho Trial Plate at Ashburton. Sir Hugh ran well enough at Riccarton to suggest, that a race would soon come his way, but the distance of tho Trial Slakes at Ashburton may bo a trifle short for him. Velocipede has not been too well ridden in his recent races, and if he lias Ibo services of a capable jockey at 'To Awamutu he should be very close to the money at the finish. Although Golden King did not show up in his race at. Riccarton, ho has corno on a lot since and lie will have plenty of friends in the Awarua Handicap at Invercargill. To date Willie Win has bad two starts for a second and a first, and lie lias a chance of adding to his record in the Fail-field Hack at Ashburton. Although Air 11. W. Moss stated at Eginont that Prostration would probably go to Ellcrslic, he has sinco altered his plans and tho Lord Qucx gelding has been scratched for his engagements at tlie meeting London, who ran third in tho Great Northern Steeplechase last year, is making line progress in his schooling at Ellcrslic, and must be considered when the lightweights are being reviewed for the big Auckland jumping event. He is engaged at Te Awamutu on Saturday and his running will be followed with 'hitcrest.

Modern Maid, who heads the Hack Hurdles at Te Awamutu with .10.8, must have a big chance on her recent Avtv'alo running, where she was second io ,Yj Mestor in the Avondale Hurdles on first day. She did not reproduce her form on the second day, but nevertheless her first day’s effort was full of promise, and points to early success. Scrgia sprcadeaglod a big field when she won the Dominion Handicap at Avondale Inst month, and although she will be up against a different proposition in tho Hairini Handicap at: To Awamutu the Lord Quex —Sunny Hours filly should again give a good account of herself. Matoru was favourite in (lie Waitakcri Handicap at Avondale, but went under by a length and a head to Scbiof and Quern Nona respectively. He lias his chance in the Arapuni Handicap at Marton and it will take a good one to beat him. Cyrillian ran a creditable third at her first appearance with the colours up in the Novice Stakes at Ambcrley. She is a half-sister, by Hind, to Cylinder, Cypress, and Cyclonic and if she is as good as Cylinder she should again bring the Greenwood colours into the limelight. Swordstick was not. given any fast work for a week prior to the Ambcrley meeting owing to the tracks being regarded as unsuitable, and ho finished fourth. He should be improved by tho race and may do better at his next appearance, which will probably be at Tiniaru on May 23. Epris, who failed to show the form expected of him at Auckland at Easter, is down to contest the Flying Handicap at Ashburton, but lie will not be able to dwell at tho post with speedy beginners like Emissary, Rebel Chief, and Great Star engaged, and on this account ho may go out paying a false price. Lady Graceful's waywardness at the barrier is well-known, hut in tho Ambcrley Handicap last Saturday she appears to have got away with the others. When she was expected to come on, however, she got. the stitch and third in a foulhorse field was the . best she could do. She is to bo given another chance at Ashburton, and a reproduction of her best form under 7.12 would make her very hard to boat. The following riding engagements are announced for the Waipa meeting:—J. Sharkey. Ardmanning, Racewhip and Blackman; F. Fergus, London; H. Gold finch. Illurnani, Gay Rose; R. McTavish, Roseliglit, Galileo. Parasang lias the best recent form of the six engaged in the Ritchie Steeplechase at Invercargill. Ecclcfcchan was a bad third in the Autumn Steeplechase at Riverton, won by Royal _ Limond. Quinopal had two races at Riverton. He was well in tho roar at the finish of the Great Western Steeplechase and next day lie fell in the Riverton Steeplechase. Lochlaggan, the big disappointment in the Great Easter at Riccarton, is an acceptor for the President’s Handicap at Invercargill with 9.0. Tho Woodcnd — Glontruin marc was not at her best at Riccarton and if she lias freshened up should gi'-c a good account of herself. Recent winners in the same race include Wall Street, Beam, and Double Shot, while Travcnna is well forward now and might upset the field. Trivet must be given a great chance in the Awarua Handicap at Invercargill for, carrying 8.7, she ran second in the Riverton Cup, a length cud a half behind Qucn of Song (9.8), who -subsequently wont up to Riccarton and won f he Great Autumn. Salmo Salar, who was just beaten by Daring Deed in the Easter Handicap on the second day at Riverton, with Milford only' a neck away third, lias gone up 81h, and Milford 51b for the Awarua, which looks like providing a really fine contest. Argontio’s form lias been most consistent for some time past, blit, lie has not been good enough to win. Including and since the Banks Peninsula meeting in March tho Silverado gelding has had five l-accs for four seconds and a third, his last outing being in the Great Autumn, won by Qucon of Song, with Tizzy second. Argentic is engaged in tho Autumn Handicap at Ashburton and it would be pleasing to record a change of fortune for this unlucky performer. Diamond, who claims engagements in tlie Great Northern double, was schooled at Trentham on Tuesday and his display would not bo pleasing to his admirers. He jumped the three steeplechase fences down tho back on tho inside of the course and then took o(V at a hurdle near tlie third fence and crashed, his rider, R, K. Smith, injuring a hand and ankle, but not seriously. A report from Wellington indicates that even if Diamond goes to Ellers!io, he cannot ho at his best and is an unlikely starter in tile principal jumping events. The Dunedin Great Northern candidates Umtali and The Smuggler took part in a gallop on Tuesday at Wingatui over a mile. Golden King, Salmo Salar, and Grand Einalo going with thorn. They ran in close order along the back and coining up tho rise Uintah, and Salmo Salar dropped back. In the run homo Golden King led Tho Smuggler by a couple of lengths, and Grand Finale finished close up third; tho others were half a dozen lengths away. It was a good working gallop, and the leaders covered tho last seven furlongs in 1.42, the last six in 1.27. It was the best gallop Golden King has shown in heavy going. Tlie Smuggler went well and is in good order, lie went well in a school over hurdles the previous morning. Umtali is also in good shape.

Through falling from a horse which he was schooling on the Matamata racecourse on Saturday afternoon, R. E. Thompson, a well-known jockey, fractured two ribs and received minor facial injuries. Ho was riding Mr A. 11. Binder's Count Roussillon, when the horse struck a hurdle, unseating its rider. The injured man was attended by a doctor and later taken to the Waikato Hospital. He is expected to bo discharged within a few days, but is not likely to fulfil his riding engagements at the To Rapa and To Awamutu meetings.
