STANWAY

(From Our Own Correspondent.) STANWAY, April 20. On Saturday evening the second of the series of euchro tournaments was hold. The attendance was not quite as good as usual as there had been several social functions during the week. However, those present sepnt a very enjoyable time and the euchre provided a good contest, with some close games. Results arcLadies’ first prize, Mrs J. Old (Cunninghams); second. Mrs R. Cockburn; men’s first, Mr Enos Christian; second, Mr S. Maxwell. The School Committee hope for a better attendance in future as the children’s special fund requires to bo built up. At a School Committee meeting Mr Christian presided, , there boing present Messrs Watherston, Cowdrey, and Mr Leet (head tencher). Apologies for absoncc were received from Messrs Parsons and McMillan. It will be necessary to hold a "working bee” to clean up the old school site preparatory to laying- down concrete for a play area. It was decided to leave arrangements until after the householders’ meeting. Mr Leot reported a visit from the agricultural instructor and a discussion took place regarding the forming of a calf club. These competitions have not been a great success here in the past from the children’s point of view, as those with parents owning pedigree stock, it is felt, have a decided advantage. However, in ro-organising this competition the rules evidently are to be amended, so this matter was left over pending the receipt of further information. After accounts had been passod for payment the meeting terminated. Mrs Jefferies and Mr and Mrs T. J. Miles have returned from a motor tour of Taranaki. Misses Miles and 'Marshall have returned to Eketahuna after spending tho Easter vacation with Mrs A. Marshall.
