FRENCH ELECTIONS
RECORD NUMBER OF CANDIDATES. LEFTISTS UNITEtT. (United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright.) Received April 20, 12.2 C pm. PARIS, April 19. • A record number of candidates- — 4807 —have been nominated for the 615 seats in the Chamber, which is considered surprising, since everythine points to a straight fight between the Left and the Right. Large numbers of candidates are certain to be- eliminated in the first ballot next Sunday. The second ballot follows on May 3. Tlie election is notable for the alliance of the Leftists, including the Communists, Socialists, and Radicals, under the title of the Popular Front, and the decision of these parties to desist from the second ballot in favour of the member of the alliance who receives the mo6t votes at the first poll.
