BOWLING

THE EASTER TOURNAMENT. (By “Trundler.”) The 1935-36 bowling season is now virtually at an end, though several centre clubs have yet to hold the gathering that farewells bowls until the summer sun shines again. Some clubs, however, have preferred to get ahead with tlio preparation of their greens for next October and quietly closed, the season. Their playing areaS are now in the hands of the experts receiving much needed attention. Terrace End, Manawatu and Palmerston North greens come under this heading, and the valuable sunshine of last week has helped in the reconstitution of the sward. The Palmerston North Club’s area is in the hands of an expert and members hope that next year its condition Will more closely approach that of past years. The surface has been scratched deep with harrows in readiness for the topdressing material and grass shed. The 1936 Easter tournament was one of the most successful on record, and it was very pleasing to record the win of the president’s rink, Mr J. A’. Nasli repeating his success of 1932. Ah entry of 46 was very good and among the competitors were some well balanced rinks. Bai'y (Palmerston North) performed meritoriously in emerging undefeated from the section play, his team giving him splendid support all through. In section A three rinks won seveii games, in Section B two got eight wins, in Section C one had nine, and ill Section D two had seven. But as, according to the Dominion rules, six wins qualify, seven with this total passed into the post-section play. Th e Takaro Club’s green was in excellent order for the games on the Tuesday and there were some surprise results, well performed teams going down ..in the first and second rounds. There was promise of a keen contest between J. A. Nash and Bissell (Hastings) in a semi-final when the latter had to default after the close of Tuesday’s play as the skip and some of his associates had to return home. He was then a few points ahead of the Palmerston North rink with eleven heads to play. In the other semi-final Bary (Palmerston North) and Anderson (Terrace End) had a royal battle, and the suburban rink, who had played consistently well throughout the tournament, narrowly won to go to the final. They were fated, however, to have their colours lowered itt the final game of the tournament in which their opponents, ably Skipped by a veteran with an excellent bowling record, early got the upper hand to remain in front all through, and finally to win decisively. Though J. A. Nash does not play bowls to the same extent as formerly, he is still able to draw good shots, and at times, in both the section and post-section play, he extricated Ids side from difficult positions with the ability of the skilled bowler. He has a Dominion tournament to his record and before tliifT constitution of the Manawatu Ceiitre won the Palmerston North Club’s Easter tournament on occasion. There were some surprise results in the section play. Crump and Ramsay (Palmerston North) both failed to qualify in Section A, and it rarely happens that they do not participate in the post-section games. King (Manawatu), Section B, Tantrum (Takaro), Section C, and Arnott (Palmerston North), Section D, similarly failed, but by one game only. Larcomb (Northern) in Section D had a well balanced team skipped in most games by C. Rabone and they had only three wins, one being at the expense of Arnott (Palmerst-on North) which destroyed his chance of qualifying, as in the next game Arnott also went down to P. Childs (Terrace End) after a keen congest.' 'Tli© Takaro and Northern greens were in good order for the tournament, though the new Northern Club green did not appeal to some players.
