AVET AND SQUALLY. Per Press Association. WELLINGTON, April 21. A series of rather intense westerly depressions is crossing the Dominion. Forecast. Strong north-west to westerly winds, reaching gale force at times. AA’eather: Squally and changeable, with rain at times, with heavy showers in places. Temperatures moderate. Seas rough. STEADY RAIN. RECORDED IN CITY AND DISTRICT. Steady rain fell in Palmerston North last night and early in the evening, at about 6 o’clock, it became a heavy downpour for a short period. For a time lightning was observed, although there was no thunderstorm in close proximity to the city. Lightning was seen in Palmerston North up to 7.3 U p.m. For the 24 hours closed at 9 a .'in. to-day the record kept at the Boys’ High School showed that 1.1 inches of rain had fallen. The heavy fall of last evening found any weaknesses in' roofs of buildings and in one case the water accumulated above the ceiling of local premises. Later it burst through by its weight and poured into the room below. MANAAVATU RIVER GAUGE. Noon.—lft 9in.
