Further messages about the San Francisco earthquake showed that it had occurred at 5.16 a.m. Fire was sweeping .through the ruined buildings- on an eightmile frpnt. It was believed that the whole city was doomed. . In a few weeks £I2OO had been raised toward the 'cost of installing a larger organ at the Napier Cathedral. A report of a meeting of the Terraco End School Committee showed ; that permission had been granted a dentist to examine the teeth of the pupils, a date for the visit being, specified. The jubilee of Presbyterianism in Canterbury was to be celebrated on the next Sunday. ' The first minister of that church in Canterbury had landed iu Lyttelton in April, 1856. Dr. J. A. Dowie was retiring from the pastorate of Zion City, stated a New York message, and lie had accepted a low rate of interest on his investments. A message from Pietermaritzburg stated that the situation in regard to the native revolt under Bambaata was most critical.
