LONGBURN
(From Our Own Correspondent.) LONGBURN, April 10. A pleatant. time was spent in the hall on Wednesday afternoon, the occasion being the fourth birthday of the \\ oinen s Institute. The .hall was tastefully deocrated with bowls of dahlias and autumn loaves, whilst on the afternoon tea_ tables v\ere vases of scarlet salvia*. Mrs Hotelier presided and welcomed Aliss Grant, of Palmerston North, members and friends and also visitors from the Opiki Institute. Aliss Grant, who was presented with a ■>osy, gave a talk on institute matters. She congratulated the members on their enthuifiasin in connection with institute work. Seven new members were welcomed and enrolled, these being Alesdamcs Harrier, AI art in, Jackson, Lindsay, K. and 1. Woodham and Miss I. Holder. Mis* Grant kindly presented 'the j/oin'v? pri'V’S, (o winners being Mm G. Afabcy 1. Airs Lolland 2, Airs W. Fletcher 3. Two competitions were held; the first, “collecting peas,” was won by Airs Alabcy. of Opiki; the second, leaves,” being won by Aliss C. Cooksley. also of Oniki. Consolation m-izes were awarded to Mc,dames Fletcher and Cooksley. Aliss I. Holder was the winner of the lucky cun of tea. Mrs Fletcher was presented with a dainty nosy from the members of the Opiki Institute. Afternoon tea was served In- the committee, a special feature being the birthday cake with four candle*, made bv Airs G. Afabey and iced by Airs C. C. Hills. The candles w-ere lit by the youngest member and the cake was cut by the oldest, member. A number of school children, accomnnnied by members of the school eommitW. teachers and parents, journeyed to Wellington on Thursday to attend the Wellington Winter Show. 'Messrs D. and R. Row'and and J. Fraser have returned home after a motor tom* of the North Island. Aliss T.yla On imply-!! has returned from a holiday spent with friends in New- Plymouth. ATossrs R. Howland and W. Weddell are at present attending the, Alnunfed Pities rnnin at Dnnnevirke. The friends of Airs -lordan will regret to hear that she is imlbror'-d. Airs ■T. AlcEwan, of TCarere, is '-'siting Afrs C. Peterson, of Kin-slangi. ATis* F. Fletcher, of Wanganui, has returned home.
