MANAWATU COUNTY FINANCES.
CREDIT BALANCE SHOWN. “I would like to congratulate the treasurer and his staff on the position that is shown in the county accounts for the year ended March 31,” stated the chairman (Cr. W. E. Barber) at yesterday’s meeting of the Manawatu County Council in referring to the financial statement, which showed that the council was in credit to the extent of £IOB2 in the general account on the year’s working. The chairman went on to say that it was a very creditable recovery on the part of tiie county. He knew the large cleb'it balance which at one stage the council was faced with had been the cause of certain misgivings' in the minds of some of the councillors and ratepayers, but he had always had faith in the ability of the council to surmount the many extraordinary difficulties that had from time to time unexpectedly presented themselves. Air A. K, Drew (county clerk) gave a summary of the accounts. stating that during the 31 days of March the sum of over £15,000 had gone through the council’s account under various headings. At the same time last year, the council had been confronted with a debit in its general account of £I4OO. Cr. N. Mprcom said he was particularly gratified at the recovery in the finances. He had always viewed the debit balance with apprehension, but lie now felt very happy about the position. ' Members of the council were agreed that a very satisfactory result bad been achieved.
