THE WATER SUPPLY

COUNCIL’S DECISIONS. DEVELOPMENT OF TIRITEA. Following upon consideration of the terms (previously announced) under which a labour subsidy would be payable by the Unemployment Dep-art-if a further dam were erected at Tiritea, the Palmerston North City Council last evening decided to ask Mr H. F. Toogood, of Wellington, to state his fee for a supplementary report on certain phases of the Tiritea water supply to he made by himself and the city engineer. The council instructed the engineer to proceed, at a -cost, not exceeding £6O, with the sinking of a trial shaft near the county side of the Fitzherbert bridge over the Manawatu River to ascertain the nature of the shingle bed and other conditions available for a water supply. Subject to the City Council defraying survey fees and fencing costs, it was offered, for £l2O, a rectangular piece of land, half an acre in extent, on the property’ of the late Mr S. R. Lancaster in Vogel Street as a site for the proposed artesian bore. The council decided to complete the purchase, accepting the conditions of sale laid down. " The works committee reported that the shortage of water complained of at Terrace End had been found by the engineer to be due to a fall in the flow of water at the gasworks bore, probably caused by a blockage. The Mayor’s action in having cleaning of the bore undertaken was confirmed.

The engineer reported that the consumption of water during the year ending March 31, as recorded by meters at Tiritea, was 673,728,000 gallons and at the Heretaunga Street pumping station 159,880,000 gallons of artesian water, making a total of 833.608,000 gallons, and representing a.n increase of 10 per cent, on last year’s consumption. From both sources of supply the average weekly consumption was 16,031,000 gallons, or 2,290,000 gallons daily.
