TENNIS.
BANKERS’ TOURNAMENT. To celebrate St. Patrick's Day, bankers drawn from a wide area held a tennis tournament at the Linton Street courts on Tuesday. The principal event was a doubles championship which was won by Hume (Palmerston North) and Boyd (Sandon). The run-ners-up were Harrow (Wanganui) and Apiin (Mangaweka). The other event was a consolation handicap, which was won by Barker and Gardner (Palmerston North), with Reed and Pullover (Palmerston North) runnersup. Mr H. C. Morgan presented tile prizes and in doing so thanked the Palmerston North Lawn Tennis Club L>r placing their courts at the bankers’ disposal. Mr Bull was tournament secretary and is to be congratulated on the smooth running oi the matches. It has been decided to make the tournament an annual one to be played at Palmerston North. Gavin (P.N.) and Clayton (P.N.) beat Alexander (Maugaweka) and Failover (P.N.), 9—l. | Mansell' (Bulls) a.nd McDonald (P.N.) beat Wiiullcy (Wanganui! and Styche (P.N.), 9 —5. Hume (P.N.) and Boyd (Shannon) beat Barker (P.N.) and Murray (P.N.), 9 —7. McCarthy (Shannon) and Thomson (Pahiatua) beat Plimmer (P.N.) and Robertson (Woodville). Bull (P.N.) and Hill (P.N.) beat Alexander and Reed (P.N.), 9 —(5. Second round.—Harrow and Apiin beat White and Grunnnitt, 9 —6; Mansell and McDonald beat Gavin and Clayton, 9—l; Hume and Boyd beat McCarthy and Thomson, 9—7; Hill and Bull, a bye. Semi-finals. —Harrow and Apiin heat Mansell and McDonald, 9 —3; Hume and Boyd beat- Hill and Bull, 9—3. Final (best of 3 sets). —Hume and Boyd beat Harrow and Apiin, 4—6, 6 —4, 6 —4. CONSOLATION EVENT. First round. —Small and Styche beat Windley and Murray, 9 —6; Plimmer and Beale beat Ewing and Robertson, 9 —B; Barker and Gardiner a bye; Reed and Failover, a bye. Semi-finals. —Small and Styche beat Plimmer and Beale, 9 —5; Barker and Gardner beat Reed and Failover, 9—G. Final. —Barker and Gardner beat Small and Styche, G—4, 3 —G, G —3. Iu a representative tennis match yesterday Hawke’s Bay defeated Wanganui at Napier for the Christie Cup, by 16 matches to 8.
