CHEVIOT HOMESTEAD. Per Press Association. CHRISTCHURCH, March. 16. The old homestead on the Cheviot Estate was destroyed by fire this morning; the house was unoccupied. At 5.30 o’clock a teamster who was lying awake in quarters in the manager’s house noticed a glow an of fire and aroused the occupants. The house was already burning fiercely and nothing could be done to save it. The house was a landmark in the district and contained more than 40 rooms. The homestead, which was the property of the estate of the late Mr J. Connolly, formerly M.P., was insured for £2OOO.
