UNEMPLOYMENT.
DECREASE SHOWN. A decrease in the total number of unemployed in New Zealand in the four-weekly period from November 23 to December 21, 1935, is shown in the figures dealing with the national totals, the drop being 326._ On the latter date there were 35,653 males receiving rationed relief work or sustenance, or awaiting placement on relief, in New Zealand, compared with 35.979 on November 23, 1935. The following detailed figures (those for November being shown first) are given as a comparison, although they do not include some thousands of men working on full time in industry subsidised by the Unemployment Board: — . . Registered but not eligible or not placed on relief, 1825 and 1737. Receiving rationed relief work under scheme No/ 5, 19,610 and 18,844. Receiving sustenance without work, 14,544 and 15,072. Totals, 35,979 and 35,653.
