COMMERCE AT HOME.

MARKETS IMPROVE. Received January 23, 12 noon. LONDON, Jan. 22. The markets started quietly and improved sharply, contrary to expectations, owing to an influx of Continental buying based on fears of the franc. Gilt-edged securities were better. Woolbrokers are satisfied with the progress of the sales and a further increase in the prices of Merinos is neither expected nor desired. The market, however, was disappointed that Germany did not enter the market, the early buying on her behalf not being sustained.
