WOOLLEN GOODS.

CAMPAIGN AGAINST SUBSTITUTES.

Leading wool men at Bradford have approved the hosiery trade’s proposal to launch a campaign to encourage the use of wool in wiew of the inroads on the market made by cotton, linen arid rayon. The questions of adapting more knitting machinery to knit artificial fibres for hosiery, or continuing with wool against foreign competition, mainly Japanese, were raised. Some speakers thought that the campaign was unnecessary in view of the absorption of Australia’s 3,000,000bale clip. Others emphasised that other countries, rather than Britain, wert consuming it, that work must be provided for Britons and that use must be found for the Australian clip if it continued to increase. Collective effort to publicise the virtues of wool should be made in Australia. It would be advantageous if the Australian Pastoralists’ Association. invited a hosiery representative to visit them and point out the dangers of the position.
