THE WEATHER
HEAVY RAINFALL'. WEATHER REMAINS UNSETTLED. After the weather had been unsettled and threatening for several days, rain commenced to. fall heavily at 3 a.m., to-day. and for a period continued with considerable intensity, after which it slackened into a steady fall until about 7.30 a.m. A fall of 1.22 inches during the night was recorded at the Tiritea waterworks, where a fresh soon developed in the stream. All this morning conditions remained distinctly threatening with the outlook unpromising, and there were anticipations of further rain, temperatures being appreciably cooler. lAIPROVEAiENT TO-AIORROW. Per Press Association. AYELLINGTON. Jan. 18. Yesterday’s storm is now beginning to pass eastwards and an anti-cyclone is advancing across tlie Tasman Sea. Forecast: Moderate to strong northwesterly winds, hacking shortly to south-westerlies. Weather: Cool and changeable, with showers at times. Improving to-morrow. Seas rough. MANAWATU RIVER GAUGE. Noon. —2ft.
