RANGITIKEI.
AIAItTON, Dec. 10. The monthly meeting of the Alarton Borough Council was held last evening, the Alayor (Mr E. Purnell) presiding. The Rangitikei County Council wrote asking the council’s co-operation in order to cope with the spread of weeds and further requesting tnat the county inspectors be allowed to act within the borough. It was decided to help i. ll every way possible. St. Stephen’s Fair Committee wrote asking permission to organise a procession through Broadway to the Park via High Street on New Year’s Eve, to permit the Alounted Rifles to give a demonstration on the PArk, and requesting the council to reconsider its decision in relation to the question of a bonfire. The first request was approved subject to tlie traffic inspector being conferred with, and the second and third were referred to a committee to inspect the Park in conjunction with representatives of the fair committee and the Amateur Athletic Club. In connection with the question of rebuilding the Drill Hall, it was decided to renew the previous representations to the new Alinister of Defence (Hon. E. Jones), pointing out the facts concerning the insurance on the building which was destroyed by fire, and the cost of renting tlie present building on drill nights. It was decided to make a contribution of £3 3s to tlie St. John Free Ambulance, Wanganui. The treasurer (Air C. C. AlcDonald) presented a statement on cash receipts for the month, which totalled £3220 19s 6d. Principal items of revenue were: Rates £2476 16s 7d, gas, etc., £220 6s, water fees, etc., £lB9 19s 4d, heavy traffic licenses £92 13s. Permits were issued for buildings of a total value of £2057. The Alarton Swimming Club held its learners’ class last evening when some 30 pupils were coached in the various methods. A life-saving class was also held outside the baths.
Feeling reference to the bereavement suffered by ex-Councillor A. McKenzie, in the loss of his wife, was made by the Mayor (Mr F. Purnell) at last night’s meeting of the Marton Borough Council, and a motion of sympathy with the family was carried in silence.
