PUDDINGS SPOILED.
GRIT IN SUGAR, Received December 7, 12.25 p.m. LONDON, Dec. 6. Hundreds of home-made Christmas puddings were discovered to have been made from brown sugar containing sand. A shipload of sugar imported from Barbadoes specially for puddings was retailed and no suspicion was raised until housewives complained of the gritty taste. An examination revealed that not only was it gritty, but peppery and pebbly, and grocers are offering to refund the cost of the puddings. Native sabotage at the port of embarkation is suspected.
