OPERATIONS AT AWAPUNI. CONTESTANTS' AT i'EVIN. (By “Binocular.") The candidates for the Levin fixture wore galloped at Awapuni this morning, when the conditions were excellent, the course having made a good recovery. The flags were well out, but there were some good eiforts registered, nevertheless. R. Reed, who returned yesterday from Sydney in company with Mrs Reed and their son, immediately got into his stride again and was out riding work before breakfast this morning. Ho will be riding at Levin, where in previous years he has signalled his return from Australia by immediately riding a winner. Merry Night (Reed) and Kitty Quinn (W. E. Pine) were partners over five furlongs. They ran the first two furlongs in 28scc. and five in 1.8 -3-5. Round Score (Anderson) and Hunting Lodge (Reed) registered a smart effort in running* seven furlongs in 1.34 4-5. The first two furlongs wore left behind in 27 4-ssec. and the half-mile in 54 2-ssec. Round Score had a neck advantage at the finish. Ruenzori (Anderson) and Princess La Jean (Mansfield) slipped over half a mile in 53 2-sscc. —a good effort for a brace of maiden performers. Severe (Reed) has lost all her earlier brilliance and Corroborce (Jones) had her her measure throughout in a six furlong galiop. They ran the first three furlongs in 39sec., Corroborce then drawing away to finish three lengths clear in 1.20 1-5. Wagner (Chisholm), who may be taken io Ellerslic at Christmas time, forged to the front early in a half-mile scamper with Lavish (Reed), and he was about five lengths clear at the post after running 53sec. It was a stylish performance. Frugal (Tattcrsall) and Round Up (Rac) set a merry pace in the early stages of a five furlongs effort, leaving the first two furlongs behind in 25sec. They finished together in I.7—another attractive effort. King’s Lancer (Pine) and Battle Pomp (Brown) were together at . the close of a five furlongs effort, run in 1.8 3-5., but tho former appeared to be going the better at the close.

Gold Cure (Reed) set the pace in the early stages of a seven furlongs gallop with Treasure Hunt (Anderson), but the latter worked on terms at the end of three furlongs and beat his partner home by a neck. They ran the first furlong in 14scc., four in 53sec., and seven in 1.34 3-5. Legatee (Jonc3) registered a very smooth performance in running five furlongs in 1.6 2-5. He was travelling fast when lie went off from behind the peg, the first two furlongs being traversed in 26 l-sscc., and he was still going within himself at the finish. Tho Posterity colt promises an early return to form. Petrarch (Reed) had tho measure of Celeriias (Anderson) at the close of a mile task. They ran the first two furlongs in 28 2-ssec., and tho full journey in 1.54 1-5. Celcritas, who will contest the hurdle event at Levin, was stopping at the close.

Barley Almond (Mansfield), alone showed a good turn of speed in running five furlongs in 1.9. Bazaino (Anderson) ran his first two furlong in 26scc and maintained his pace till the close to run the full journey in 1.6 3-5. The chestnut is steadying down and he should race all the better as a result. Cyclopean (Anderson) and the Colossus — Tikimai celt from Pine’s stable ran a smart half-mile in 52sec., after running tho initial furlong in 13 4-ssec. Cyclopean drew clear in tho straight to be a couple of lengths in advance of tho two-year old, but it was a good effort on the part of both. The only jumping attempted was executed by Tainbo (C. Thomson) who, after pecking at the first fence, improved as he advanced. He negotiated five fences. Tiger Bill (A. McDonald) negotiated a round of four fences, but ho jumped carefully. RIDING ENGAGEMENTS. Riding engagements announced for Levin are : C. Thomson. —Tambo. A. McDonald. —Celcritas. L. H. Jones. —Corroborce, Dorado. R. Reed. —Merry Night, Hunting Lodge, Conversion (Hokio). W. E. Pine. —Alcides, Knock Out, Abracadabra, RACING AT LEVIN. S. Anderson. —Ruenzori, Trimdcn, Treasure Hunt, Bazaine. SATURDAY’S "GATHERING. The response from owners on acceptance night assures tho Levin Racing Club of a most successful meeting on Saturday and, as tho weather promises to bo favourable, a large attendance of patrons should result. District enthusiasts have had some experience of tho operation of tho dividend barometer in win and place betting, but the Levin Club will operate it on the 75—25 basis of percentages. The opening event is set down for 12 noon.
