CRICKETER’S DEATH.

HON. F. S. CALTHORPE. PLAYED IN PALMERSTON NORTH. The late Hon. Francis Somerset Gough Calthorpe, the former captain of Warwickshire, whose death has occurred in England at the age of 43 years, toured New Zealand with the M.C.C. team in the 1922-23 season. On the occasion of the visit of the touring party to Palmerston North, where the M.C.C. met a combined eleven drawn from the Manawatu, Wairarapa, and Rnngitikei Cricket Associations on Febrary 7, 1923, Calthorpe played a magnificent innings of 136 towards the visitors’ total of 306. While the Englishmen won by a comfortable margain, the collapse of the M.C.C. men in the second innings will long be remembered by local enthusiasts. The two High School boys, Massey and Bennett, played havoc among them and six wickets were lost for 53 runs, Massey accounting for four wickets at a cost of 14 runs, and Bennett two for 34.
