KUIIAL UAivllSiUri. In response to a letter from the Whaka-ta-ne Chamber of Commerce suggesting that it might be more profitable to develop idle land than to recondition abandoned farms, as pioposed, the Minister of minds (Sir Alfred Hansom) has replied stating that the idea is to salvage Crown leaseholds and securities, part eularly in those oases where the work involved is of the nature of clearing, tondressing and stocking. The purpose of the scheme is twofold, the iuimeuiute employment ol a large amount of manual labour provided by the Unemployment Board, and the sa - vicin'' of Crown moneys already involved Entries for the Egmp.it agricultural and pastoral show have eclipsed again those of lho Jubilee Show of 1933. 1 lie aim in that year of a record of 2000 entries was exceeded by 383; last . year s figure exceeded that and this year’s cm.■ics number 2503. Details of the entries (with the 1 uhilec Show figures in parentheses) are:— Horses 555 (433), cattle 484 (521), sheep 253 (189) pii's 291 (218), home industiios 925 (1022), totals 2508 (2383). , The champion dairy cow at the Hanoi a Show received a canteen of cutlurv, valued at 45 guineas, while the class for" two dairy cows in milk, judged ou dairv type, carried a 100-gumca silver cup.
