MAGISTRATE’S COURT.
A young man appeared before Mr J. L Stout, S.M., in the Magistrate s Court to-day on a charge ot doing minor to two curs wliil© diunk in Coleman Place at 12.45 a.m. to-day. The offence was described as a drunken prank hut a senseless sort of mischief. Accused was fined 5s for drunkenness and £2 on each of the two charges relating to the cars, being ordered to make good the damage. CHARGE OF THEFT. Malcolm Ross Kells, alias Edward George Gore, alias Bennett, of no fixed abode, appeared before Messrs J. H Stevens and J. T. Boswortli, J.P.’s, on a charge that on August 15 last, at Palmerston North, he did break and enter by night the dwelling of William McKegg in Cuba Street, and steal therefrom one bottle of gin and clothing, of a total value of £2. Evidence was given by Mr McKegg that on his return from a visit to Christchurch he had found that bis house had been broken into. The washhouse window had been broken and an intruder had been in every room in the house. Shirts, sox, other clothes, a bottle of gin, and some keys were missing. Mrs Bishop, a widow employed as a domestic at an adjoining house, gave evidence that at 1.30 a.m. on August 15, she awoke during the night, looked out of her window and saw a torchlight in Mr McKegg’s house. Constable Compton gave evidence that be had interviewed accused, who had made a statement admitting the offence during a period when bo was drinking heavily. The police bad been unable to recover the missing property. Accused pleaded guilty and was committed to tbe Supreme Court at Wellington for sentence.
