RANGITIKEI.

MARTON, Nov. 18. After three abandonments owing to rain, the cricket season opened in llangitikei on Saturday in good weather, save for a heavy shower at the tea adjournment. This deadened the wickets and hampered the bowlers for a short while, but made conditions tricky for the batsmen after an hour’s further play. In the match Old Boys versus Hunterville, the former won by 102 runs. Marton were defeated by Porewa by two wickets, but the latter elected to play on, and made a total of 149 against Marlon’s 120. It was decided to open the track season on December 3, with the first meeting for the Chainev Cup (cycling), and for trophies donated by Air R. Marshall (men’s running), and Air F. Tuck 30 years ago for presentation to the Alarton Athletic Club. However, it had never been handed over, and it has come to hand now from the deceased gentleman’s trustees. The shield has been remodelled by two local craftsmen, Alessrs D. Henderson and A. Todd, and will be used for the purpose for which it was presented—an annual cycling teams contest. The Levin Club wrote stating that they were prepared to proceed with an inter-club contest for a shield this season. The suggestion was supported and a delegation was appointed to meet the Levin Club to arrange details. Advice was received that the members of the A. and P. Association had donated two cups to the*club for competition, and it was decided to suggest that they be for points prizes for the Galpin Cup series.—A vote of thanks was accorded the donors. It was decided to write to the Wanganui Sub-Centre, who will be controlling the AVest Coast Centre championships this season, asking that the Marton Club be given the right to stage them. It was pointed out that Alarton had twice staged the sub-cen-tre championships and should now be given the right to stage the more important fixture.
