COUNTRY TRIAL GAME

SET FOR DECEMBER

A meeting of the management committee of the Ala.nawatu Cricket Assooiation was held last night, when Mr A. M. Onglev presided. Others present were Messrs J. Griggs, E. J. AVerry, J. R. Hnrdie, R. S. Warwick, F. Hubhard. E. Weir, and RA. Brace (secretary). An apology for absence was received from Mr W. H. Wilson.

The Victoria University Club wrote enquiring whether it would be possible to arrange the customary holiday fixture with Mannwatu. and suggesting December 25 and 26. —The chairman mentioned that the holiday dates would have to be reserved for Hawke Cup challenges, while should the trophy he retained the same restriction would apply to January 1. 2 and 3. It was accordingly decided to offer the ’Varsity Club any dates other than those aforementioned. The Y.M.C.A. Club wroto expressing the opinion that the practice of taking 20 players in a two-hourly period for coaching was not effective, it being the opinion of the club that a limit of five per hour should he imposed. Arising out of the discussion it was decided to reduco the coaching fees to 2s Cd per hour. The Southern Hawke’s Bay Association advised that the suggested date, December 7, for the match with Manawatu at Dannevirke was not suitable and suggesting January. 22 (Anniversary Day).— It was decided to advise the writers that meantime January 22 would have to be reserved for Hawke Cup games. In view of the fact that December 14 would be occupied with the Country trial game at the Sportsground, Feilding and Horowhenua are to be invited to send teams to Palmerston North on that day.

Mr Ongley, as sole selector of the country team, tabled advice to the effect that it had been decided at the conference of minor associations in Christchurch to play a trial game between the minor associations of the Wellington province at Palmerston North on December 13 and 14, with the annual Town v. Country match at Wellington on December 25 and 26. Mr Ongley explained that in his opinion there would be a considerable difficulty in assembling 22 country players at their ow r n expense for two matches in close succession. Further, he had pointed out to Mr Duncan, the Wellington selector, that Manawatu would be engaged in a Hawke Cup game on December 25 and 26, while the challenging association would also not he represented in the Town v. Country match at Wellington. Authority was given Mr Ongley, the Manawatu selector, to choose any local players he considered worthy of inclusion, while the Sportsground oval was allocated for the trial fixture. It was further decided to postpone all senior fixtures on December 14. Reporting on the business transacted at the conference, the chairman mentioned that the remit relative to the duration of Hawke Cup matches had been defeated, but it had been agreed that in the event of a first innings not being completed in three days, the match \ie extended to the fourth day—hut no further—to permit of a first innings decision being arrived at. Further, the remit urging the appointment of outside umpires for Hawke Cup matches had been defeated. GENERAL. , In paying a tribute to the service Mr J. H. Phiilipps, a member of the Wellington management committee, had rendered to country cricket, Mr Ongley mentioned that Mr Phiilipps had been directly responsible for the annual visit to Palmerston North of the Kilbirnie Club daring the past five years. In recognition of his services the chairman moved that Mr Phiilipps he invited to be present at the country trial match on December 13 and 14 as the guest of the Manawatu Association. Mr Hardie seconded the motion, which was carried unanimously. Permission was granted the High School first eleven to play their annual game with Wanganui Collegiate school at the local school grounds on the 27xh inst. Mr Warwick reported that the date allocations for coaching, where the primary schools were concerned, were as under: —Saturday next; Terrace End and Milson (first hour); Hekowhitu and West End (second hour). Saturday week: College Street and Convent (first hour), Central and Russell Street (second hour). FIXTURES FOR SATURDAY. The following is the draw for Saturday:— United (m) v. Palmerston, No. 2 Sportsground; High School (m) v. Old Boys, High School ground; Y.M.C.A. (m) v. City Council, No. 1 Sportsground. Junior A: The matches which opened on Saturday will be continued. Junior B : Kiwi (m) v. United, North Street Park; Old Boys (i;) v. 11. L. Young’s, No. 5 Sportsground; Y.M.C.A. (m) v. Combined Services, No. G Sportsground.
