MANAWATU GORGE ROAD. “Local matters requiring the immediate attention of the incoming council will be the state of the Manawatu Gorge Road, which requires some attention in the direction of preventing a recurrence of the many slips to which it has been subjected during the past year,” states the' annua report of the president (Mr A J GrahanO of the Palmerston North Chamber of Commerce. “Other needs are improved facilities at the Post Office m order to cope with the increasing business the removal of the present obsolete’police station and the erection of an up-to-date building, and the opening up of the Opiki Road through the Makerua Plains as a main highway. “For a city of the size and importance of Palmerston North, our membership is not as large as it should be, and I would earnestly appeal to any who have not yet linked up with the chamber to do so during the coming year Chambers of Commerce provide the machinery for dealing with all matters relating to commerce and industry, and are doing very valuable work in promoting and protecting commercial, industrial, agricultural and pastoral interests; fostering and developing our primary and secondary industries; in promoting or opposing legislative or other measures which help or hinder commercial or industrial interests, and in encouraging and assisting commercial education. To voice adequately commercial opinion and to advance and protect to the utmost degree general business interests a strong membership is essential, as the larger the membership the more powerful will be the influence of the chamber. “The formation of the 50,000 Club is cordially welcomed. Its activities will do much to stimulate civic pride and create a unity of outlook based on mutual confidence and a sense of community of interest that will ensure the future growth and prosperity of our city.”
