PAHIATUA.

PAHIATUA, Nov. 18.

Mr T. Stone was a victim this morning of a painful accident while working at Messrs Gardner and Yeoman’s mill in Main Street, where he has been employed for several years. While operating one of the machines a. batten became caught in a pulley and was swung round, striking Mr Stone severely in the abdomen. He suffered a lacerated wound and was admitted to the Hospital. He will be incapacitated for a week or two. At the week-end tho Anglers’ Club were to have fished against the Woodville Club in the Stockwell Cup competition, but owing to the flooded state of the Manawatu Iliver, this liad to be postponed. The local streams were in fair order, so the second of the club competitions was held, the following hags being weighed in : H. K. Mann, 6 fish, 91b; R. Merrie, 4 fish, 51b: S'. Matthews, 3 fish, 41b. Mr D. Gavin, of the railway staff at Pahiatua, has been transferred to Gisborne. Miss M. Britland, of the Horoeka School, has been transferred to Blenheim.

On Sunday night motorists using the main road to Woodville encountered trouble on the southern side of the Ngawapurua bridge, where the highway is being reconstructed preparatory to tar-sealing. The excessive rain had softened the thin crust over the clay, and the passing of a few cars soon turned it into a veritable quagmire. Cars with good road clearance were able to make through to safety, but many smaller low-set vehicles were completely stuck, and in several cases required to be pulled clear.

Pahiatua sportsmen have been active stalking in the Tararuas of late, and report good sport in the ranges. Messrs R. Nutting and V. Baker worked the Waiwera ridge and sighted half a dozen fallow, eventually shooting a fine young stag".
