KNAPP’S TEAM INCREASED.

DAWNING LIGHT’S PROGRAMME. (By “Binocular.”) After Money, who was returned lo the Dominion this week from Australia, has commenced her education as a member of J. P. Coyle’s stable at. Awapuni. L, Knapp has a newcomer by Poinb.nlBattlo Torque, by Martian-Torquato, who will in due course carry the colours of Mr W. H. Gaisford, of Oringi, who has the Pombal gelding Esteem already in the stable.

Dawning Light is being worked the rcverso way a.t Awapuni by W. Pine in readiness for a trip to the Auckland mooting. After the mentor had disposed of Symeony last year this filly went north to win the Musket Stakes at Ellcrslic.

After experiencing a lean season owiiig to leg trouble, tho big raking gelding Catalogue promises to do better for his joint-owners this year, lie has now built up in condition and ran sufficiently well at Foxton to indicate that he is coming back to his best form. Five races for two-year-olds have now been decided, and three of them have been won by fillies. While tho Awapuni youngsters have not started off so well this term, it is quite possible • that they will play a bigger rolo as tho season advances.

The Gisborne pair, Grand Sport and Sporting Blood, were solidly backed in Sydney last week for the Epsom-Metropoli-tan double. Both arc particularly useful. Apparently Legatee, who forms one of G. W. New’s team in Australia, ran his best race so far on tho trip when he finished sixth in tho Hill Stakes, more particularly as the field was high class. It was rather anticipated before the mentor left that a return would have been forthcoming ero this. M. Caddy, who rode Wino at Ashburton, was having his first mount in public. Wino pulls hard and is rather much of a hamtful, particularly for a novice in the saddle. Linguist, who was taken over by G. Fcilding from A. E. Didham after tho Wellington meeting, is again hi the latter’s charge.

Jewelled Girdle, a half-brother to Lomint and Catoma, registered his first success when he accounted for the Maiden Plato at the Avondale meeting. Bon Tray, who races in the south, is from a very speedy family, being by Tea Tray from Endorse, by Paper Money from the Absurrd mare Epitaph.

Last season Perfect Rose, tho daughter of Paladin and Solrosc, shaped very promisingly without getting amongst tho money. Sho may, do hotter this term. Scooter, who was due to make her first appearance in public at Otaki to-day, is a three-year-old daughter of Vaals and the Guianforte mare Cleverlea. She is owned by her breeder, Mr W. Mcßeth, of Otaki. The Riccarton horseman, G. 11. Humphries, has been engaged in ride Mr G. M. Currie’s horses, Moquette, Spiral, and Entail, at tho Auckland meeting next month.

The hurdler Soloist injured himself when he fell at the second fence in the Grey Lynn Hurdles on the second day at Avondale, and ho will have to be given a short rest before racing again.

King Roy put up some good performances last season, winning at Avondale in the autumn and subsequently annexting the President’s Handicap one mile and a quarter, at To Rapa, while he ran third in tho Cornwall Handicap at the Groat Northern meeting. He had not started since the latter meeting till he competed in the Avondale Cup last Saturday.

Gold Cross has made considerable irn. provement during tho short time since joining D. Colton’s stable. Gold Cross won so well at Ashburton that lie becomes worthy of note. He was got by Catmint from Vcrintia, by Solferino —Anita, by St. Ambrose —Stepka, by St. Logcr—Stepfcldt.

Lord Val made his debut as a. hurdler l at the Avondale meeting. He jumped very carefully and was soon at tho tqil of the field, but he made up a bit of leeway towards the finish, being seventh when tho post was reached. Lord Va! was a good performer on the flat over a middle distance, and with experience is sure to do well at the jumping business.

Hawke’s Bay reports state that Wallace Young’s maiden candidate by Hunting Song from Cynette has had the name of Brig Stick claimed fo her. She is smart and the first maiden race she contests will sen her one ol the prime favourites. Brig Stick is the name of Lod Lonsdale’s hunting box or lodge in England. TAUMARUNUI MEETING.
