SANDON.

(From Our Own Correspondent.) SANDON, Sept. 25. A pleasant evening was spent at “Brooklynne,” the residence of Mr and Mrs A. K. Drew, on Monday, the occasion being a farewell to Mr J. H. Smith, who leuvos the employment of the Munawatu County Council at the end of the week to take up a position at Masterton. The guests enjoyed themselves with a hazard whist competition and at a suitable interval Mr Drew expressed regret at Mr Smith’s departure, but stated that as the change meant advancement and the gaining of further experience overyone present wished him every success. Mr Ken Pearce, on behalf of the guests, asked Mr Smith to accept a special pencil as a memento of his stay at Sandon. In doing so Mr Pearce said that although Mr Smith had been a resident of Sandon for only a short period he had become a popular member of the bridge circle, football and sports clubs, and was held in high esteem by all. Musical honours wero accorded the guest of honour, who in reply stated that, he had been taken by surprise. He would highly prize the gift. He had enjoyed his stay in the district and it had always been a pleasure to assist in the organisations he had been associated with. He expressed his thanks to Mr and Mrs Drew for then- hospitality. Tho ladies’ prize was won by Mrs W. E. Pearce and the consolation by Miss E ' Galbally, and the men’s prize was won by Mr Don Grace and the consolation by Mr C. Guscott. Among those present were: —Air and Airs A. K. Drew, Mesdames 11. Anderson', H. Pearce, B. J. Frecklington, W. E. Pearce, J. Watts (Feilding), Misses E." Pearce, E. Galbally, J. Watts (Feilding), J. Kilpatrick, F. Anderson F. Palmer, It. and N. Frecklington, E. Hope, Messrs H. Pearce, K. Henson, D. and C. Grace, S. E. Orr, J. Ircckhngton, K. Pearce, C. Guscott, Al. Pearce, J. Bradley, G. and W. Drew, W. Jenkins, S. Kent, and J. Palmer. , , „ The hall was crowded to overflowing on the occasion of a farewell social by the residents of Sandon and district., tendered to Mr and Airs J. W. Mastors, who arc leaving to tako up their residence at Aorangi, Foilding. Tho time was filled in with a varied programme of items and dancing. Before supper was partaken of. Mr H J. Fagan, on behalf of the residents, ‘asked Air and Mrs Masters to accept a silver tea and coffee service as a token of esteem and appreciation. Mr Fagan, said ho had been associated with Mr blasters in different activities for a great number of years, and it was with drop regret that ho carried out tho duties of making tho presentation. Air blasters was the son of ono of Sandon s oldest and best-known pioneers, the late Air T homas blasters, whoso name would always be associated with tho progress of the district. Mr J W. blasters had taken a prominent part in the activities of the Methodist Church, and had boon an enthusiastic member of the School Committee for a number of years. Ho had held several offices in the Sandon Old Boys Association and had served a term as its president. Ho was a hard working member of the Sports Club, and a member of tho local branch M. tho W.E.A. In fact he had always identified himself wth* all organisations that had the advanccment and good of the district m view Airs Alastcrs, he added, was a prominent, momber of the Womens Institute and had proved herself one of those good women who were always willing to assist m anything that was for the good of their fellows The whole district regretted the departure of two of its most worthy citizons. Rev. R. E. Fordycc voiced the regret of the members of the Methodist Church at the departure of Mr and Mrs Alastcrs; their places would bo hard to fill, Kev. B. White expressed- tho appreciation of the parishioners of tho Anglican Church for tho help and assistance which had been given on different occasions by Air and Airs Alastors, particularly at tho Flower Show. Mr B. J. Frccklinton, on behalf of tho residents of the Ohakea district, whoro Mr Masters had lived as a boy, also expressed regret at his departure. Mrs J. Bowator, president of the Sandon branch of tho W.E.A., expressed regret at Air Masters’s departure, and made a presentation of a Pipe on behalf of the members. Musical honours were accorded the guests and Mrs Masters was presented with a bouquet by little Aliklrcd Currie. Air Alasors thanked all present most heartily for the kind wishes that had been expressed and also for tho beautiful presents, also for the many kindnesses that bad been shown by th" residents of the district whilst they had lived amongst them. They would always look upon Sandon as home. Tho following items wore given during the course of the evening, tho programmo being arranged by Mrs Drew Pianoforte solo Miss F. Anderson; musical tableau, Misses M. Coulter. D. fhygev, M. Currie, M. Tostovin, and Girl Guides; song, bliss N* Mastors; poi dance. Girl Guides: trip, Messrs Currie, Tostovin and Drew. Tho music for the dancing was kindly supplied by Mrs E- N. Butler and Mr C. Grace.
