A CHARGE OF ATTEMPTED SUICIDE. Harold Francis Davidson, the former rector of Stiffkey, appeared at Blackpool Police Court recently to answer a charge, “that he, at Blackpool on August 3, did unlawfully fast with intent then feloniously, wilfully, and of his malice aforethought, to kill and murder himself.” Sidney Proffit, a member of the Town Clerk’s Department, said that on August 3 he entered a show advertised at the promenade, in which was the defendant. He asked Mr Davidson what was his intention in lying there starving himseif. He said that he wished to influence the Bishop to get the verdict of the Consistory Court reversed. “After more questions,” the witness said, “I asked him : ‘ls it your intention to starve, even to death, unless the decision of the Consistory Court is reversed and the Bishop reinstates you ? His reply was: ‘Yes. That is my intention.’ I asked him the question : How long have you been starving ? His answer was: ‘This is my tenth day. The case was adjourned, bail being allowed on condition that the defendant did not continue to deprive himself ot food.
