Mr H. C. Walker, formerly a member of the staff of the ManawatuOroua Electric Power Board and now engaged in aviation interests, was a visitor to Palmerston North during the week-end. The death occurred suddenly at Nightcaps yesterday of Brigadier Middlemiss, divisional commander of the Salvation Army for Otago and Southland. Brigadier . Middlemiss was visiting Nightcaps in the course of his duties, and on Saturday suffered a heart attack. Deceased was 60 years of age. He is survived by Iris widow and a grown-up family of four. Brigadier Middlemiss was stationed at Palmerston North a few years ago and the many friends lie made here will learn with regret oi his passing. The retirement is announced of the registrar of the University, of New Zealand, Mr E. T. Norris, M.A. This will take effeevt from September 30, 1930, but as Mr Norris has been granted six months’ leave of absence he will relinquish his position on March 31, 1936. He was appointed assistant registrar in 1911, and occupied that position until 1914, when he became registrar of Victoria University College, Wellington. In 191.0 he was appointed registrar of the University of New Zealand. The death occurred at his residence, “Lilybank Farm,” Westmere, last week of Mr John William Murchison, a well-known farmer. He was born at Wanganui on November 21, 1869, and was the eldest son of the late Mr John Murchison, of Seafield. He originally commenced farming in the Wanganui district, but later took up sheep farming in Hawke’s Bay. He eventually returned to Wanganui, however, and bought the well-known “Lilybank” property at Westmere, where he resided until the time of his death. Deceased was recognised as a successful fanner and a good judge of stock. He leaves a widow and a family of two sons, Jack and Donald, of Westmere, and two daughters, Mrs P. Waters, of Waipukurau, and Mrs A. Hanson, of Pahiatua.
