LAST WEEK’S BUSINESS AND PRICES. With few exceptions the stock 1 and share markets in New Zealand displayed a weaker tendency last week, in line with a similar trend in London, New- York, and Australia. Business was dull, investors showing a hesitant attitude in face of the disturbed international situation. Many issues showed marked recessions in values compared with those ruling last month, and the turnover was definitely restricted. Gil Lodged securities attracted most attention, and a substantial volume of business was recorded in Government loans. The 3£ per cent, inscribed stock, 1938-43 and 1939-43, sold at. £lO3, and the 1939-52 and 1938-52 maturities were done at £lO9 and £lO9 2s 6d. Business was done in the 4 per cem., 1940, at £lO2 and £lO2 ss, the 1946 at £lO6 17s 6d to £ 107 ss, the 1949 at £lO9 15s to £llO 2s 6d, and the 1955 at £ll2 to £ll2 7s 6d. There was a moderate turnover of local body debentures. Bank shares were sluggish and somewhat oasior. Reserve Bank declined from £6 10s 3d to £6 9s. Now Zealand cased from 50s lOd to s(fe 7d and 50s 9d, but the D mortgage issue were steady at 33s 9d to 33s lOd. Commercial of Australia ordinary were sold at 16s 7d and 16s 6d, and the preference at £9 10s and £9 9s. National of New Zealand cased on sales from 72s 6d to 725, E;S., anti A. sold at £5 10s, Commercial of Sydney at £lB, and Unions at £9 ss. Insurance shares also were inclined to ease. A.P. Assurance, sold at 22s 6d, Nationals at 20s 8d to 20s 6d, New Zealand at 64s 4d to 63s 3d, South British at 94s to 93s 3d, and Standard at 725. Business in the financial and pastoral section was quiet. Mortgage Corporation sold at 6s 2d to 6s 4d and down to 6s Id. New Zealand Guarantee Corporation were firmer at 5s 2d to 5a 6d. Dalgcty sold at £8 11s, and Farmers’ Auctioneering 40s paid ai; 275, and £5 paid at 80s. Goldsbrought Morfc weakened on sales at 31s 6d to 29s 6d. Gas and coal issues wore a dull market. Auckland Gas sold at 25s 9d. and the 15s paid at 19s 3d. and Christchurch Gas wore done at 335. Westport Coal sold at 22s 2d, Renown preference at 2s 8d and 2s 9d, and the ordinaries at 9s lOd. The i only dealings in timber issues were Kauri, which weakened to 22s and 21s 6d. New j Zealand Refrigerating were definitely firmer, the fully paid going at par to 21s 5d and 21s, and the 10s paid at 9s lid to 10s 4d. Southland Meat sold at 80s, and Gear at 21s 6d. Miscellaneous industrial and trading issues were less active. Broken Hill Proprietary weakened on sales from 65s Sd to 645. Colonial Sugar firmed from £42 15s to £43 10s, and a sale was made in Auckland on Saturday at £43. DunlopPerdriau, after touching 13s lid, recovered to 14s sd. Wilson’s Cement sold at 40s 3d and 40s. Woolworths, Ltd., ordinaries were easier on sales at £5 4s 6d to £5 6s. There was a fairly good turnover in mining issues, Mount Morgan and Gillespie’s Beach being most actively traded.
