DAFFODIL DAY.

TECHNICAL SCHOOL APPEAL. The annual daffodil day appeal of the Palmerston North Technical School was held on Saturday, and late in the morning the response was stated to be veiy promising. From about 9 a.m. the residents 0 of the city area were canvassed by pupils of the school selling spring flowers, daffodils being the predominating variety. A fine number of contributions of flowers came, forward, donations being received from as far away as Masterton, Marton and Foxton, others being to hand from intermediate points, with a good response from the city itself. Acting as genera supervisor, the director of the school (Mr G. G. Hancox) was engaged in seeiim to the smooth running of the activities of the day. Those in charge of the various blocks in which the city had been apportioned were Messrs A. J. Newman, D. M. Scott, J. Walker, b. .1. Bennett, N. A. Fry, U. S. Steverson and A. G. Richards, members of the staff. The pupils carrying out the canvassing were assisted in their duties by the provision of cal's by a number of parents, two other gentlemen who were not parents of children at the school also making their cars available. In addition to the canvassing, a stall was held near the Post Office and a shop was conducted on the opposite side of the Square. Those conducting the stall were Mesdames F. Hardy and M. Aitchison and Misses Rennie and j. Young, while Mesdames J. Barsanti and A. N. Beattie conducted the shop. Copper trails were held by pupils at the shop and at the stall, and all the members of the staff were engaged in furthering various phases of the appeal. The total takings of the day amounted to £6O 3s sd, which bettered the previous record of £6O Is Id, established in 1932. In the eight years in which Daffodil Day Iras been held the net amount resulting from the efforts is £403. Such a sum speaks highly of the efforts of those who have been engaged in the work. In the evening, the Ex-Students’ Association held a dance in the assembly hall, Mesdames A. N. Beatties and J. Barsanti assisting with the supper. A number of novelty items were included in the entertainment.

Mr J. A. Naslr, M.P., chairman of the Technical School Committee, and Mr Hancox thanked those who had assisted with the effort.
